Wreaths Across America 2014 Saturday December 13th

"Many Hands Make Light Work"

December 13, 2014

Wreaths Across America- Click to go to the Wreaths Across America website Thousands of people descended upon Arlington National Cemetery to volunteer in placing freshly made Christmas wreaths on 230,000 graves (over 400,000 are interred there). Several lodge members including two Executive Board officers of the lodge spent a clear, crisp, sunny, Saturday morning honoring those that served in past wars and conflicts and in all the military branches. A diverse group of volunteers: military vets, high school groups, church groups, boy and girl scouts, high school ROTC cadets, active and retired police and firemen, military service men and women, business groups and everyone in between fell in behind huge tractor trailers loaded with holiday wreaths. I was told that each trailer held approximately 3600 wreaths. A police motorcycle escort of 20 uniformed officers led these large tractor trailers into Arlington National Cemetery hauling the wreaths that were made in the state of Maine. Representatives of Wreaths Across America, Inc., said this was the first year that every head stone would have a Christmas wreath placed next to it. Several lodge members volunteered to help with this event and I hope they had a great time. Thank you fellow lodge members and to their families in helping with this endeavor. It was a grand time. I know I will be back next year!

Each year, the FOP works with Loudoun County Public Schools to identify students whose families might not be able to afford gifts or winter clothing during the holiday season. The FOP then conducts fundraising to sponsor a holiday shopping spree for those children.

"We usually raise somewhere in the vicinity of $32,ooo," said John Ohrnberger, president of FOP No. 69. "We help out usually about 75 kids, including this year, and we also make donations to local charities."

This year, members of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office voluteered to meet the kids for breakfast at Wegman's and then take them shopping at Target.

The Cops and Kids program started in 1998 when the FOP lodge was founded. Anyone interested in donating to the program, can visit vafop.com. Click here to see Slide Show and full story....
